An hours-long standoff in McHenry County ended Thursday with the arrest of a man accused in two residential burglaries, prompting a large police response and a safety alert for residents in the area.

What we know:

Patrick Anderson, 44, was taken into custody Thursday afternoon following the standoff, according to the McHenry Police Department.

On Monday, officers responded to a residential burglary in the 1200 block of North Green Street. Police said they were called back to the same address Thursday morning for another burglary.

Anderson was identified as the suspect in both incidents, authorities said. After the second burglary, police went to his home, where he retreated inside and refused to comply with officers’ commands.

Police said they had probable cause to charge Anderson with residential burglary. They obtained an arrest warrant and a search warrant for his home.

Officers attempted several times to contact Anderson and convince him to surrender but were unsuccessful. Streets in the area were blocked off, and residents were urged to avoid the neighborhood until further notice.

Investigators later learned Anderson was a convicted felon with a history of resisting law enforcement and may have had access to a firearm, police said.

McHenry police requested assistance from the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System Emergency Services Team. A short time later, officers entered the home and took Anderson into custody without incident. No injuries were reported.

What's next:

Anderson is charged with:

  • Two counts of residential burglary, Class 1 felonies
  • One count of obstructing justice, a Class 4 felony
  • One count of resisting a peace officer, a Class A misdemeanor
  • One count of criminal damage to property, a Class A misdemeanor

He was taken to the McHenry County Jail. Court proceedings are pending, and police said the investigation remains ongoing. Additional charges are possible.
