Shootout outside Indiana hotel leaves suspect dead, Chesterton police officer wounded

What we know:
Around 8 a.m., Chesterton police were called to the Hilton Garden Inn, 501 Gateway Boulevard, for a report of a suspicious man.
There was an exchange of gunfire between two Chesterton police officers and the suspect who had been staying at the hotel. The suspect was killed in the shootout while one of the officers was also shot.
He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for treatment. Indiana State Police said he was later released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. No other injuries were reported.

Richardson said the police officer is 33 years old and has been with the department for roughly five years.
Indiana State Police are leading the investigation into the shooting. A gun was recovered from the scene.
Richardson said both officers involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave, in line with department policy.
"What often goes unseen is our officers putting their lives on the line for our community and two of our officers did just that this morning," Richardson said.

The suspect who was killed has not yet been identified, pending the notification of next of kin.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing, authorities said.
The suspect’s identity will be released at a later time by the Porter County Coroner’s Office.
